Growing up, I was in the foster care system because of poor mental health and substance use in my parents. Because of that experience, I chose to go into social work. Taking care of your mental health can be life-altering and have lasting impacts.
I put a lot of focus on social determinants of health and their impacts on patients’ overall health. Healthcare should focus on a person as a whole and not just a disease or symptom. Healthcare should consider a person’s beliefs and goals rather than prescribing what providers believe is best for the patient.
If I wasn’t working in healthcare, I’d be a teacher.
