Shawn Dalgord came to Mountain Park Health Center a week after his Type 2 diabetes diagnosis.
“Finding out that I had diabetes was scary. It was the first time in my life I was afraid, and I’ve seen a lot in my life,” Shawn told us, during a recent visit to Mountain Park.
Shawn, one of our many homeless patients, didn’t have many people to lean on and he needed a healthcare facility that he could trust. A physician from the hospital he was staying at told him about Mountain Park and he decided to give us a try.
“Best decision I made,” he said. “Mountain Park really helped me.”
Shawn’s Doctor, Cheryl Villamor-Nierva, took him under her wing and helped him get to a better, healthier place. A diabetes diagnosis is life altering, and Shawn needed a team that would stand beside him on his path to better health. Dr. Villamor-Nierva set up a consult with a nutritionist who gave Shawn tips on keeping his diabetes at bay, and then had a behavioral health specialist come in and make sure Shawn was in good spirits.
“I have been a patient for six months now and I don’t ever see myself going anywhere else,” he said. “Not only were they able to help me with my medical health, the dental team is amazing too.”
Because of his aggressive diabetes, Shawn started having severe pain in his head, eyes, ears and neck.
“I was in so much pain and it was all coming from my teeth.”
His teeth started deteriorating. Doctor Jothi Nadarajah took care of him and eased the pain Shawn was living with.
“Dr. Nadarajah is so great, she is extremely patient and I appreciate that,” Shawn said.
Before coming to Mountain Park Shawn felt like he wasn’t able to function. Now he says he feels like a new man.
“Everyone has made me feel so great. Now my health is up to par, and I can have a normal conversation with the team members,” he said. “Thank you, Mountain Park, for caring. I really do love coming here.”
